How do you install boat lid shocks?
1. Weigh the Boat Hatch
It is critical to know the total weight of the hatch. Instead of guessing, unscrew the hatch cover from its hinges and use an accurate scale to determine the weight. Any scale that can be weighed will do.
2. Determine upper mounting points
Open the hatch to the position where the support is needed. At the bottom of the hatch one-third to one-half of the way from the hinge to the other side of the hatch, mark the mounting point for the upper support of the marine gas struts. The angle at which the gas spring is mounted is very important.
3. Marking the lower mounting point
The lower mounting point is usually located directly below the upper mounting point. Remember, the strut does not need to be perfectly vertical. Before marking the lower mounting point, make sure there is enough room for a bracket or ball stud to be installed in its place.
4. Measuring the gas strut
Open the cover and measure the distance from the top mounting point to the bottom mounting point. This will tell you the length required for the strut to extend. For compression length, measure at the same angle from the lower mounting point to the edge of the compartment; then measure from the upper mounting point to the lower edge of the cover. Add them together.
5. Calculate the required support force
Use this formula to determine the required support force: Weight of hatch (lbs) x Distance from hinge to centerline of hatch Distance from hinge to mounting point of strut bar on hatch to allow for easy closure when open. 6. Mounting with the correct bracket
Gas Spring offers a wide selection of angled and flat brackets to accommodate a variety of mounting configurations. Each bracket has a 10mm ball stud into which the gas strut bracket (with a socket on each end) snaps. The gas struts for boat hatches should always be installed so that the narrow rod end is below the inflatable barrel. The support rods can be lengthened to make it easier to install the gas strut with the cover open.
